Controversy Surrounding INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Calls for Arrest and

Nigerians are accusing INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu of manipulating the results of the 2023 presidential elections, which declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner. Many are calling for the election results to be nullified and for Peter Obi of the Labour Party to be declared the winner or for a rerun of the elections. Nigerian rappers Falz and Vector released a song criticizing INEC and its chairman for alleged election rigging. An online poll shows that most people support the arrest of Yakubu. Additionally, there are concerns about the fairness of the ongoing cases at the Presidential Elections Tribunal.

Following the declaration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential elections by INEC, Nigerians have expressed grievances towards the commission’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, accusing him of manipulating the election results.

Yakubu has been accused of working for the APC candidate during the elections, and individuals and groups in Nigeria and the diaspora have called for the nullification of the election results and the declaration of Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) as the winner or a rerun of the elections.

Despite the commission’s insistence that the 2023 elections were free and fair, many Nigerians remain unconvinced. This has led to the creation of numerous criticisms aimed at the INEC boss, including a song titled “Yakubu” by Nigerian rappers Falz and Vector.

An open ballot initiated by a Twitter user named Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Stan has shown that most people are in support of Yakubu’s arrest. The poll has received about 501 votes in favor of his arrest and 175 votes against it.

In another development, an ardent supporter of the Obidatti presidential bid, Dr Charles Odogwu, has called on the judiciary not to undermine Nigeria’s democracy. He raised concerns about the possibility of a military coup and reminded the judiciary that the military is also observing the events at the Presidential Elections Tribunal.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have filed separate petitions at the Presidential Elections Tribunal, challenging the results of the 2023 elections. They allege that INEC contributed to the manipulation of the electoral process, resulting in Bola Tinubu of the APC being declared the winner.

The petitioners argue that the electoral collation was still in progress when Tinubu was declared the winner and that he did not receive 25% of the lawful votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They also claim that Tinubu should not have been on the ballot due to an alleged United States District Court judgment ordering his forfeiture of suspected drug trafficking proceeds.

While the cases remain pending in the PEPT, the candidate of the PDP and others have withdrawn their respective cases for lack of substantial evidence, leaving only Peter Obi of the Labour Party still in court.

Concerns have been raised about the integrity of the judiciary’s decision in the elections tribunal, with people and organizations urging them not to betray the trust of Nigerians in the nation’s judicial system.
