Former Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been elected as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Governor Ganduje’s election took place during the 12th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party held in Abuja on Thursday.

At the same meeting, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the 9th Senate spokesperson, was elected as the National Secretary.

Both officials were elected to fill vacant positions in the APC leadership team, following the recent resignations of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the former National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

The new leaders were unanimously elected during an executive session of the meeting and took the oath of office and allegiance.

Ganduje stated that his main focus as the national chairman is to promote party unity and increase the number of executive and legislative seats held by the APC.

He emphasized the importance of internal democracy and wider consultations within the party.

Ganduje also urged Nigerians to be patient with the President and promised that the policies and programs to be unveiled by the administration will improve the country’s economy.

He expressed his commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all party members who wish to contest elections under the APC’s platform.

In addition, the NEC of the party has delegated its powers to the National Working Committee to fill six vacant positions in the administrative organ of the party.

However, the appointment of Ganduje as the new National Chairman has drawn criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party due to corruption allegations against him.

Despite claims that a viral video showing Ganduje receiving bribes was doctored, a forensic analysis by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission confirmed its authenticity.

In July 2023, a former commissioner and four others who worked under Ganduje were arrested over an alleged N1 billion fraud.
