“Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes” Exhibition at South London Gallery Featuring Nigerian and British Nigerian Contemporary Art Practice
An upcoming exhibition at the South London Gallery will feature works exploring connections between Lagos and Peckham, home to one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the UK. Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes will feature sculpture, installation, photography and film by Nigerian and British Nigerian artists, with a focus on contemporary practise. Highlight works include a new installation by Ndidi Dike, which evokes the sights, sounds and smells of Lagos’ marketplace and engages with issues such as global exploitation. The exhibition runs from 5 July until 29 October, with free entry.
The South London neighborhood of Peckham has become home to a large Nigerian diaspora community in the UK. To acknowledge this relationship between Lagos and Peckham, the South London Gallery is presenting a group exhibition titled “Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes.” The exhibition, co-curated by Folakunle Oshun and the South London Gallery, focuses on contemporary art practice and features works by Nigerian and British Nigerian artists. Sculpture, installation, photography, and film are included, with a highlight being a large-scale installation by Ndidi Dike that evokes the sights and sounds of the Lagos marketplace and tackles cultural, social, economic, and political issues. “Lagos, Peckham, Repeat” will be on display at the South London Gallery & Fire Station Galleries from July 5 until October 29, and admission is free.
Peckham is home to one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the UK.
This summer, the South London Gallery will present an exhibition that explores the themes connecting Lagos and Peckham.
Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes, is a group exhibition spanning both of the galleries sites in Peckham Road, Peckham.
Co-curated by Folakunle Oshun, founder and director of the Lagos Biennial, and the South London Gallery, the exhibition brings together works by Nigerian and British Nigerian artists.
Lagos, Peckham, Repeat will focus on contemporary practice, featuring sculpture, installation, photography, and film.
Highlights include a newly-commissioned large-scale installation by artist Ndidi Dike.
After spending her early years in London, Ndidi Dike relocated to Nigeria.
There she completed her degree in Fine Arts at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka in 1984.
Ms Dike’s work in the exhibition will evoke the sights, sounds and smells of the Lagos marketplace.
It will engage with cultural, social, economic and political issues including the global exploitation of hard and cash crops.
Mr Oshun said: “The exhibition explores the idea of pilgrimage as a journey to fulfil a specific ritual or intention.
“In this case, a quest to find and make a new home, reducing the necessity for return, but equally initiating a cycle of sojourns.”
Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes will run from July 5 until October 29 at the South London Gallery & Fire Station Galleries in Peckham Entry is free.
