Tommy Smothers, one half of the groundbreaking comedy folk duo the Smothers Brothers, passed away at the age of 86.

His brother Dick Smothers, who worked with him to deliver controversial political satire on network TV in the 1960s, released a statement about Tommy’s passing on Tuesday (Dec. 26) to The Hollywood Reporter and the National Comedy Center.

Per the statement, Tommy Smothers passed away “peacefully… at home with his family” after a “recent battle with cancer.”

Performing with Tommy on acoustic guitar and Dick on double bass, the duo played satirical and absurd folk music with a socio-political edge starting in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s, they were making regular appearances on various variety programs, from The Judy Garland Show to The Jack Paar Show.
