Supreme Court Justice Chima Centus Nweze Passes Away A Look

Supreme Court Justice Chima Centus Nweze has died at the age of 64 after a brief illness. Nweze was highly esteemed for his role in landmark judicial cases. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014 on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council. Nweze was responsible for significant rulings, including the declaration of Emeka Ihedioha as the winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State. He also played a part in the decision declaring Ahmad Lawan as the legitimate candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District. Nweze’s death leaves a void in the South East’s representation on the Supreme Court.
 

A Supreme Court Justice, Chima Centus Nweze, has reportedly passed away. He was 64 years old and died on Sunday night after a brief illness. Justice Nweze was highly regarded and played significant roles in landmark judicial cases in Nigeria. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014 by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

One notable ruling by Justice Nweze was the declaration of Emeka Ihedioha as the winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State in 2020. He also delivered a judgement declaring Ahmad Lawan as the legitimate All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District in the 2019 general election. Additionally, he was part of the panel that declined Atiku Abubakar’s request to inspect the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) server while challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2019.

Justice Nweze was known for his meritorious services and contributions to the judicial service. He was born on September 25, 1958, in Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State. He was a devout Roman Catholic and was married to Hon Justice Ugonne Jacinta Nweze. They had five children and a grandchild.

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Nweze obtained a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He had a successful career as a lawyer and served in various capacities in the Enugu State judiciary before being elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2008. He served on the Supreme Court bench from October 2014 until his passing.

With the passing of Justice Nweze, the South East region currently does not have a single Justice in the Supreme Court, as Justice Odili is retired and Justice Ngwuta passed away two years ago.
