The presidency announced that Orire Agbaje, an Economics student and president of the University of Ibadan’s tax club, has been selected for the committee.

The presidency shared the news on its official X account, highlighting Orire’s achievements and roles within the university.

In a post, the presidency wrote: “One of the members of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms inaugurated today by President @officialABAT is Miss Orire Agbaje, a 400-level Economics student of the University of Ibadan, who is also the President of @ui_taxclub, President of @SEIHUnibadan, and a Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) Scholar.”

Orire is also the President of the Nigerian Universities Tax Club.

Furthermore, Mr. Olusegun Dada, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media and Digital Communications, shared a picture of President Tinubu with Agbaje on his verified X account, emphasizing the unique selection of Agbaje for the committee.

President Tinubu appointed the committee, headed by Taiwo Oyedele, to oversee tax law reforms, fiscal policy design, and coordination of taxes and revenue administration.

The committee is also expected to propose quick reforms that can be implemented within thirty days, according to President Tinubu.

Orire Agbaje’s appointment makes her one of the youngest members of President Tinubu’s cabinet and one of the youngest political appointees in Nigeria in recent years.

The inclusion of youth in government has been a longstanding demand in Nigeria, and the “Not too young to run” bill was passed to address this issue.

However, youth participation in government activities has been limited due to various factors, including the failure of sitting governments to actively involve young Nigerians.

With an undergraduate like Orire being appointed to the federal government, it gives hope to young Nigerians that leadership opportunities will be available to them in the future.

President Tinubu’s appointment of Orire into the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms demonstrates an inclusive government in Nigeria, where participation in government is not limited by race or status.
